HR AND H&S ADVISOR
£25K – Negotiable – Permanent - Birmingham

SPECIFIC ACCOUNTABILITIES
Reports to:Managing Director and Directors
Purpose of the Job:
The post holder is responsible directly to the Managing Director and Board of Directors for the overall Advice to the company on Human Resources and Health and Safety Matters.
Main Activities:
- To maintain and develop the Human Resources and Safety procedures and systems of the company, in co-operation with the Directors and Managers.
- To take delegated responsibility for the business sites and audits of Health and Safety issues and advice on HR matters.
- To be the named advisor responsible for health and safety within the business.
- To share expertise and skills with others, appreciate and support the role of other professionals. To establish constructive relationships and communication with members of the business.
- To advise and lead on matters relating to personnel, participating in training and other activities and performance appraisal and development as required.
Human Resources:
- The production and maintenance of Policies, Procedures and systems and compliance with current employment legislation.
- Contributing to the continuous improvement in HR systems and practices.
- Advising managers on recruitment and selection strategies.
- Co-ordinating the appointment process for successful applicants, issuing contracts of employment, amendments, advice on disciplinary proceedings and resignations.
- Conducting job evaluations to ensure accurate Job Descriptions and Person Specifications are produced
- Advising on terms and conditions of employment.
- Responsibility for investigating cases of ill health and ensuring all systems have been completed and processed appropriately.
- Providing an advisory role in work reviews and change processes.
- Write and present information briefings on a range of HR related topics.
- Advising on staff development.
- Advising on issues related to workplace relations and performance management.
- To maintain confidentiality at all times in respect of business related matters sand to prevent disclosure of confidential and sensitive information.
Health and Safety:
- Conduct H&S audits and on-site inspections to identify workplace hazards and unsafe equipment, working practices or working conditions.
- Investigate H&S incidents, complaints and cases of ill health; complete or verify incident reports; liaise with other technical specialists and external environmental agencies to identify the causes of these incidents and prevent their recurrence.
- Undertaking risk assessments.
- Ensuring that equipment is installed correctly / safely.
- Identifying potential hazards.
- Determining ways of reducing risks.
- Writing internal health and safety policies / strategies.
- Compiling statistics.
- Drawing up safe operational procedures and advising on necessary changes.
- Prepare and submit all required H&S reports, (both internally and to external agencies), accurately and on time
- Educate and train the organisations workforce on emergency response procedures, handling hazardous materials, and other aspects of H&S management to ensure that they understand and comply with the organisations H&S policies and standards, through regular Toolbox Talks.
- Keep up to date with proposed and actual changes in Health and Safety legislation; so that the organisation’s H&S management policies remain current and relevant.

PERSON SPECIFICATION
Experience
Essential:
- At least five years experience of working in a Human Resources and Health and Safety position.
- Knowledge of current use of ICT.
- Previous experience of engineering management.
- Experience of working with managers in an advisory capacity.
- Experience and understanding of budget constraints.
- Experience of working in an engineering environment or context.
Qualifications/Training
Essential:
- Education to GCSE level with Maths and English at Grades A*-C or equivalent with excellent numeracy and literacy skills.
- NVQ Level 4 (or equivalent) in relevant area
- High level of computer competency.
- CIPD Qualification
- NEBOSH qualification (or equivalent)
Desirable:
- Diploma in Human Resources (or equivalent)
- Engineering Qualification (ONC, HNC, BTEC, City & Guilds)
- Evidence of continued professional studies).
